What is this for?

You’d be surprised how many innovation projects go awry just because they haven’t been linked to a strategic objective that matters to the organization. It’s even more surprising that many people in the organization may not have a clear idea about their organization’s strategic objectives. This tool will help you and your leadership team align on the strategic objectives that are of the utmost importance for your organization- providing you with the directional guidance that you need to determine which innovation projects to accelerate and which of them to kill.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1

Fill in Your company values, you should be able to find them on the company corporate website.

Step 2

Outline your company vision. This is the long term view on what your company wants to be.

Step 3

Fill in your company mission. This is a relatively stable goal that your company wants to achieve in the long term.

Step 4

Now it's time to get much more granular and think a little bit more shorter term, 3-5 years out. What are your strategic objectives? the choices your organisation has made in it's business strategy? This is what will guide the strategic alignment of the projects you will map.

Step 5

Finally, you can start listing out the innovation projects. You can start with just the titles/project names and use the Innovation Project template tool to convert the projects into mappable elements.

Tip

The thoroughness with which you complete this step will determine the quality of the insights you generate from Innovation Portfolio Mapping, so take the time you need to complete this tool and create alignment.
